Sometimes, life makes you big before the normal population. It comes as a surprise, and you hardly get the time to stand straight. And at moments like these, the question of the meaning of life arises and takes the faintest moment of peace away from you. The same is the story of Raja, the heir of the estate of Mayflower, which his dad and mom left to him as they died. To his surprise he was not ready and too depressed to take up the responsibilities even though he never feared hard work. But the thought that he promised his mother that he would take care of her as soon as he finished his studies and never making it killed him through his life, still he never gave up. The beginning indeed was hard to cope with and there were always obstacles in his way. The eternal question of whether there will be happiness and love in his life haunted him and took away his sleep. Life did not turn out the way he thought.
The book, “The House of Mayflowers: A Tale from Kodagu” by Geetha Kariappa is a very idealistic and real story. The writing style of the author is sincere and detailed. You will get little spots where you will be able to relate to similar feelings and dilemmas. The best part about the book is that no where does the story seem to be made up and a movie is always running in the head of the reader. I loved the character development and the italic quotes and sentences. They are real feelings of characters and very heartfelt.
Don’t miss out on this beautiful and stark novel. It will need some patience and involvement. But you will leave it with a lesson or two. Happy reading!
